What Is Myopia?
Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long, causing distant objects to appear distorted. Common signs include squinting at the board at school, sitting close to screens, or complaints about blurry distance vision.
The growing prevalence is linked to prolonged screen time and reduced outdoor activity. It typically develops during childhood and continues progressing through the teenage years. Early intervention provides the best opportunity to slow it down.
Why Myopia Management Matters
When left untreated, the condition can advance to what is called ‘high myopia’. This increases the risk of serious eye diseases later in life. These can include:
Glaucoma – a group of conditions impacting the optic nerve
Retinal detachment – when the retinal tissue at the back of the eye detaches from its normal position
Macular degeneration – when the central vision gradually worsens
Regular glasses correct blurry vision but they do not address the underlying eye growth causing myopia progression. Specialised myopia management treatments can slow this advancement, potentially preventing high myopia. Who Is Myopia Management For?
We recommend myopia management for children and young people aged 6 to 20 whose prescriptions are progressively increasing. Children with myopic parents face a higher risk and often benefit significantly from early intervention.
